Are you planning to visit Portugal in summer? For many people the first choice is Lisbon, however there are several less congested, but equally interesting and beautiful cities in the most western corner of Europe. Faro for example is a brilliant target! Closely located to the Spanish border, from where you can reach Huelva (Spain) in a couple of hours! Rent a car and discover all the alluring areas. Don’t bother with taking the car back to Portugal, because you might as well drop it off in Spain!
By car, Faro Airport is only a short drive from thriving tourist beaches with plenty of fun activities for all the family. Alternatively, if you’re looking for a more romantic getaway, there are plenty of secluded coves for you and your loved one to explore. There’s also the spectacular Ria Formosa Lagoon, which is situated within a nature park, and serves as a popular sight for many visitors. It is advisable to rent a car, since Faro Airport is located close to this scenic hot-spot, and you can easily book a tour to explore the area. Faro has a rich, fascinating history, as can be seen in the Old Town, which has many historical buildings. It’s a beautiful part of the city, and there are plenty of cafes to try and enjoy a leisurely drink.
If you wish to see the whole city, you can take a stroll under the orange trees, or climb the bell tower for a great view of the city. Faro is a fantastic city, but not only because its great sights, historical heritage and stunning beaches with 27-35 °C in summer. Several low-cost airlines have direct flights to Faro, allowing you to get a flight ticket for reasonable price. Moreover, the city’s situation makes it possible for you to get to a charming province of Spain, called Huelva within circa two hours by car.
And what can we do in Huelva? It is possible, and advisable to hire a car to better explore the area. The historical city offers plenty of activities and sights to visit. The Costa de la Luz (“Coast of Light”) is for example a beautiful coast, with stunning beaches, where we can spend some relaxing time, and small fishing towns, which we can visit reaching up to the UNESCO World Heritage Site National Park of Doñana. Huelva offers several cultural attractions as well. Visit the Friary of La Rábida with features of Moorish revival architecture. This monastery gave refuge for Columbus for 2 years after his unsuccessful proposal to start an expedition to the Indies. In Condado you can examine the typical Baroque architecture, and also the famous Columbus Route, the harbors and docks which were used by Cristopher Columbus.
After you are finished with your trip, you don’t have to worry about taking the car back to Portugal. It is also possible to drop it off in Spain, if you have a flight back from any Spanish airports, but from Huelva the closest available airport is Seville, or Malaga Airport.
